MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The murderer of Felicia ‘Blommie’ Micheals (15) was handed a life sentence in the Thembalethu Regional Court in George yesterday, 9 July, after more than a year of police investigation and numerous court appearances.
Neavan Misland (28) was found guilty of the January 2025 killing of Micheals, who had been missing for a week when her body was discovered buried in a shallow grave surrounded by dense vegetation in a secluded area in Brandwag, just a few hundred metres from her home.
The two had reportedly been in a relationship, although she was a minor.
Misland was arrested by the Da Gamaskop Police shortly after, after evidence of blood spatter was found in his Brandwag residence.
Felicia’s mother, Elvira, previously told Mossel Bay Advertiser that Misland had even helped the community search for her daughter.
The case rocked the Brandwag and Mossel Bay communities, leading to a protest outside the Mossel Bay Magistrate’s Court at the time of his first appearance, led by friends and family of the victim as well as other Brandwag residents, who were demanding that Misland be denied bail.
Misland would later abandon his bail application, choosing to remain in police custody as the case unfolded in court.
When the trial was expected to begin in April this year, Misland changed his plea to guilty, removing the need for a trial altogether.
In a brief conversation after the case had been postponed once again on 1 July, Micheals’ family told the Advertiser all they wanted was for the matter to be finalised.
After several postponements and the case moving between the Mossel Bay and George courts, the 25-year sentence was finally handed down on Thursday.
Misland can only apply for parole after 25 years.
