MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Some carry mints, lip balm and purses in their handbags, while others use their handbags for more nefarious purposes.
This seems to be the case for one 43-year-old Great Brak River woman who was allegedly carrying over 6 000 painkillers in her handbag late on Saturday evening, 15 August.
According to a Southern Cape Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie, the Great Brak River Visible Policing Unit had received information at about 11:40 that morning that an Opel Corsa with three occupants inside might be transporting drugs.
They stopped the vehicle on Station Road and carried out a search of the vehicle and its occupants, and found 6 244 painkillers in one of their bags.
In South Africa, Section 22 of the Medicines and Related Substances Act (MRSA) states that only licensed pharmacies and registered healthcare professionals are authorised to sell or dispense medicines.
Pojie said the woman was arrested and is facing a charge stemming from this act.
“The suspect was charged and released on a warning to appear in the local magistrate’s court once the lab results become available,” he said.
The investigation is ongoing.
