GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - George, the Southern Elephant Seal that was hauled out to a farm in the Garden Route during July, has sadly passed away.
The Stranded Marine Animal Rescue Team (Smart) had been monitoring the seal and said it died during Tuesday night, 11 August.
Smart had estimated that George was about eight years old and weighed close to a tonne.
"Elephant seals are the largest of all seals, with males reaching up to six metres and diving for hours at a time," Smart had said at the time of the seal reaching Garden Route shores.
“Despite every effort from the Hartenbos Animal Hospital and the dedication of Smart volunteers, his fragile life could not be saved. Dr. Greg Hofmeyr of Bayworld undertook the tiring journey from PE to join the Hartenbos Animal Hospital team, collecting samples in the hope of finding answers to George's passing. If any insights are discovered, they will be shared here with our community on Facebook,” said Smart.
Smart also extended its deepest gratitude to the farmer, who so kindly gave them permission to his farm and offered his assistance and support during George's stay on his property.
