MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A taxi driver has been arrested following the collision between his vehicle and a motorcycle on the R102 outside Hartenbos yesterday morning, 17 August, which resulted in the death of the 24-year-old motorcyclist from George.
A Southern Cape Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie, said the motorcyclist was on his way to work in the Garden Walk Mall in Hartenbos when the collision occurred. Some occupants in the minibus reportedly sustained minor injuries.
The Da Gamaskop Police registered cases of culpable homicide and drunken driving, and arrested the 29-year-old minibus driver on the scene. He is expected to appear in the Mossel Bay Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, 19 August.
Pojie said the cause of the accident and death form part of the ongoing investigation.
Meanwhile, witnesses to the aftermath of the collision have described the scene as horrific and traumatising.
Two who wish to remain anonymous told Mossel Bay Advertiser that the crash had occurred at about 08:00 yesterday.
One of the sources said the taxi had been transporting about 10 people when the crash occurred, and that the motorcycle was completely wrecked.
The other source described the scene as horrific, and said he felt extreme sorrow for the man and his family.
He added that he was friends with many motorcyclists and had stopped at the scene to photograph the motorbike to find out if it belonged to any of his friends. The source claimed that a traffic officer had seen him take the photo and fined him R1 000.
He emphasised that the focus of the photo was of the motorcycle and did not mean any disrespect or harm to anyone who might have known the victim.
