NATIONAL NEWS - Intelligence shared by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and other international law enforcement agencies has led to the arrest of a 16-year-old boy over alleged child sexual abuse material offences.
The teenager was arrested in Malmesbury in the Western Cape yesterday, 17 August.
He is expected to appear in the Malmesbury Magistrate’s Court today, 18 August on charges relating to accessing, possessing, facilitating and downloading child sexual abuse material.
The operation was led by the SAPS’s National Serial and Electronic Crime Investigations team, supported by members of the Head Office Occult Unit; the Paarl Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit; Paarl K9 Unit; and Western Cape Crime Scene Investigation Unit, as well as agents from the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations and the US Embassy.
‘764’
Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk said intelligence indicated an individual linked to a violent online network commonly referred to as ‘764’ was located in South Africa.
“The ‘764’ networks are violent international online extremist networks associated with child exploitation. These perpetrators reportedly target, blackmail and coerce minors into online sexual abuse, torturing and murdering animals and other forms of harmful criminal activity,” said Van Wyk.
Animal mutilation
She added that a preliminary on-site analysis of the teenager’s electronic devices uncovered explicit images and videos depicting child sexual abuse and animal mutilation.
“The devices will undergo comprehensive forensic analysis to determine the full extent of the alleged offences. A number of child victims have been identified thus far,” says Van Wyk. “The possibility of additional offences relating to fraud and money laundering forms part of ongoing investigations.”
