MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Following the passing of the former Ward 9 councillor Erica Meyer in April, the Mossel Bay Municipal Council elected the PA’s Cllr Luhein Prins to be its new representative on the Benevolent Park board.
Prins, also the current Ward 9 councillor filling Meyer’s seat, was nominated this morning, 31 July, during the open municipal council meeting. He accepted the nomination.
Addressing Prins in the council meeting, Mossel Bay Mayor Dirk Kotzé reiterated the importance of the job and its main focus, which is the well-being of the senior citizens residing at Benevolent Park.
Briefly touching on the recent magistrate court ruling in favour of seven residents of Benevolent Park opposing an eviction order against them, the mayor emphasised the intention of creating a peaceful environment in which senior citizens can enjoy the last days of their life, and not fight with one another.
He encouraged Prins to not let the handful of unhappy residents disturb the others who say they are content to live in Benevolent Park.
Prins said he views this as an important position, because it is the town’s elderly they are dealing with. “What happened in the past, we must tell ourselves will not happen again at Benevolent Park.”
He thanked the Council for the opportunity to occupy this position.
Cllr Jeanette Gouws of the ACDP voiced her concern regarding some of the magistrate’s findings in the Benevolent Park eviction case, and about the fact that the PA was previously against the board of directors of Benevolent Park, but will now occupy a seat.
Because of this, the ACDP abstained from casting a vote. However, Prins’ election was voted for by the rest of the Council.
