MOSSEL BAY NEWS - An Asla Park woman appeared in the Mossel Bay Magistrate's Court today, 10 June, charged with her husband's murder after he was stabbed to death on Sunday, 8 June.
Lily Joubert (59) was granted bail of R1 000, after her appearance in connection with the fatal stabbing of her 65-year-old husband, Henry Peter Joubert.
During Lily's bail application, the court heard from the investigating officer of the case, KwaNonqaba Police Station's Warrant Officer Geoffrey Moos, that neither the state nor Henry's family opposed her bail.
He also confirmed that Lily did not have any previous convictions, outstanding warrants or pending matters.
Moos said that according to a report by a state witness, it was a few minutes before 15:00 on 8 June that Henry arrived home, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, and began swearing at Lily.
It is alleged that Lily took a knife and stabbed Henry, inflicting one wound in his chest and one in his back.
Henry died at the scene and Lily was arrested, also at the scene.
Moos said that according to information he received from the witness, who lived with Lily and Henry, Henry had allegedly been abusing Lily for 30 years.
He said that in those 30 years, Lily had never opened a case at the police against Henry, nor applied for a protection order.
Moos said family members of Henry were at the death scene as well as in court for the bail application and they had not objected to Lily receiving bail and they said Henry's family even supported Lily.
Moos went on to say that Lily had epilepsy, hypertension and poor eyesight and needed to be cared for by her daughter. He added that Lily was not a danger to herself or the community.
Lily was then granted bail of R1 000 on condition that she did not commit any further offences and that she did not interfere with the state witness, nor talk to the state witness about the case.
She was told that if she breached her bail conditions, she would be kept in custody until the conclusion of the case.
The matter was postponed to 4 August for further investigation.
Family members of Lily and Henry were present, some in the court and others outside. They said they did not wish to comment on the case at this stage.
