MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The man who allegedly stabbed a 42-year-old mother of five, 19 times in November last year, will appear in court again on 24 April.
The man had been arrested in October last year after the woman had opened a rape case against him. He was released on R800 bail. He allegedly attacked her on 8 November in KwaNonqaba.
Following the stabbing, a case of attempted murder was opened against him and he was arrested. The woman died a month later in Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town, from her injuries.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson for the Western Cape, Eric Ntabazalila, previously told Mossel Bay Advertiser the man's bail application for the rape charge was held on 9 October. Both the investigating officer and the state prosecutor had opposed his bail.
Ntabazalila said the state provided the court with information relating to his previous convictions: assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (2008), rape (2006), theft (2009), theft (2012 - two convictions), assault (2013) and possession of drugs (2017).
He said that despite the state and investigator's efforts, the magistrate released the accused on R800 bail with conditions that he must not make contact with the victim and must not visit her home.
However, on 8 November, it is alleged that the accused went to the victim's home just after 08:00.
There was an argument and the accused allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed the woman 19 times.
He was arrested shortly after the attack. He abandoned his bail application earlier this year and is expected to appear again on 24 April, when the rape case and murder case will be joined.
