MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The father of the eight-year-old boy who was hit by an allegedly drunk driver in KwaNonqaba over the weekend has said he is happy his son was not badly hurt.
The boy had been standing on the pavement at the intersection of Cedile and Mateza streets at about 16:00 on Saturday 2 August when a car bumped into him and veered into the wall of a building.
The KwaNonqaba Police arrested the vehicle’s driver, a 65-year-old man, later that afternoon for reckless and negligent driving as well as driving under the influence of alcohol.
The father, who asked that he and his son not be named, said he had been at work that afternoon when he received a call saying that his son had been in an accident.
“I didn’t know how bad the accident was, or what my son’s injuries were. The person just told me he had been in an accident. I was scared,” he said.
He said his son and others who were there at the time of the incident had said they had been on the pavement at the intersection when they heard a car coming.
“My son said when he saw the car, he tried to move out of its way, but it was too late. It bumped into his leg and he fell onto the ground. He hurt his nose and his mouth,” said the father.
The boy’s knee was also dislocated in the process. “He is at home now and is recovering. I am happy that he was not badly hurt. I also do feel sorry for that old man, and wonder what made him drink and drive. I do realise that the accident could have been worse, but I am thankful it was not,” he said.
The KwaNonqaba Police Station’s spokesperson, Warrant Officer Kappie Kapp, said the driver has since been released from police custody and is expected to appear in the Mossel Bay Magistrate’s Court once all the blood results have returned from the police laboratories.
