MOSSEL BAY NEWS - There was a lot of action at the seventh official 'Toughest Firefighter Alive South Africa’ (TFA-SA) open challenge over the weekend from Friday 16 - 17 September.
The mini firefighter challenge for children 3-10 years took place at 12:00 on Saturday.
Team Spartans from Mossel Bay also competed on Saturday. The Mossel Bay Fire Station hosted the prize-giving event last night.
Manie Gouws from the West Rand is the new SA Toughest Firefighter Alive. The 44-year-old Gouws, started working as a firefighter in 1999 and is currently a paramedic in the service of Gauteng Province. He has competed internationally but never managed to secure the SA title.
The past four years, Gouws has been involved in training of the West Rand Team who did particularly well in the TFA competition.
Gouws said that hard work, focus and dedication is the key to success. Gouws completed the tough course in 09:19 minutes.
The title of SA’s Toughest Firefighter Alive in the female category was claimed by Baigum Abrahams from City of Cape Town with a time of 15:28 minutes.
Piet Niemann, the oldest firefighter to compete in the challenge at 61 years of age, was given a standing ovation by his fellow firefighters and guests as he was called to the stage to receive his prize. The TFA will be returning to Mossel Bay in 2023 and 2024.
