MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Garden Route SPCA Mossel Bay branch has urged pet owners and animal lovers to take extra precautions to keep animals safe this New Year's Eve.
"The festive season is a time of celebration, but it can be a frightening and stressful time for our animals," said the Garden Route SPCA Mossel Bay branch manager, Elize Goosen.
"Cats and dogs can hear a much wider range of sounds than humans, including very soft and high-pitched noises that we cannot detect. Because of this heightened sensitivity, the loud, sudden bangs and flashes from fireworks can be absolutely terrifying for them," she said.
Goosen said fireworks can cause animals to panic, try to escape, injure themselves, or become lost.
"As responsible pet owners and animal lovers, it is our duty to take extra precautions to keep them safe and calm during this time."
Goosen gave the following tips to keep your animals safe this evening:
• Ensure proper identification: Make sure your pets have up-to-date identification, including a microchip, collar, and tags with your current contact details.
• Stay home if possible: If you expect fireworks in your area, stay home with your animals to comfort and reassure them.
• Keep them safely indoors: Secure doors, windows, and gates to prevent frightened animals from escaping.
• Reduce noise and visual stimulation: Close curtains and windows to lessen flashes and sound. Playing calming or background music can help drown out the noise of fireworks.
• Create a safe, comfortable space: Provide familiar blankets, toys, or allow them to stay in their usual safe space where they feel secure.
• Seek professional advice if needed: If you know your animal reacts severely to fireworks, consult your veterinarian in advance for professional guidance or calming solutions.
"Let’s celebrate responsibly and remember to protect the animals who depend on us for their safety and well-being," said Goosen.
She said that if there are any emergencies, the SPCA can be contacted on 072 287 1761.
