MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Mossel Bay businesses are being called on to slip into something a little more comfortable, all for a worthy cause.
On 30 May, Slipper Day, a heartwarming initiative by the Reach For A Dream Foundation takes place to unite South Africans in support of children battling life-threatening illnesses.
A local business, Grindstone, is joining hands with the environmental organisation, Earth Legacy Foundation, urging Mossel Bay businesses, from cafés to corporates, to get involved in the initiative.
This can be done by purchasing Slipper Day stickers, for R20 each, for their teams and wearing slippers.
"Whether you run a family-owned shop or a large company, your participation sends a message of hope to the children of Mossel Bay who are fighting diseases. These kids need to know their town is behind them," says Esther Jacobs of Earth Legacy Foundation.
Why Slipper Day matters
Jacobs said Slipper Day is far more than a day for a quirky dress code.
"It's a heartfelt display of support for children living with critical health conditions."
She said that for decades, Reach For A Dream has been making magic happen, "bringing joy, light, and healing through the power of imagination. From playhouses to pony rides, helicopter flights to pirate treasure hunts, these dreams give children something to hold on to when everything else feels uncertain".
One of those dreamers was Alba, Jacobs' daughter.
Diagnosed with leukaemia in 2017, Alba Overbeeke recently reached complete remission. Her dream? To find a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.
Jacobs said that Reach For A Dream delivered.
She said they cordoned off a section of Bugz Playpark in Cape Town, where Alba and her best friend went on a treasure hunt, collecting gold coins at the end of a giant, purpose-made rainbow.
"That dream gave her something joyful to focus on when the days were long and painful. That spark of hope was everything," Jacobs said.
"Our mission has always been about building a better future - for the planet and for people," says Jacobs.
"Slipper Day aligns perfectly with that. When we support our children, we invest in that future."
