MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Driving through the suburb of Dana Bay, having recently relocated back to the area after some years away, Ashley Hoffmann spotted a cheeky sign encouraging motorists to slow down for wildlife.
The sign, which reads Slow down for buck sake on a bright yellow background, and can be seen on Heide Road, immediately sparked an idea for a bumper sticker with a similar message.
The idea was cemented, however, when several people on the Dana Bay Pets in Distress WhatsApp group complained about the number of cars speeding through the suburb, which is known for its large greenbelts teeming with wildlife such as caracal, antelope and tortoises - which are also often spotted on Dana Bay roads.
Hoffmann said after she had suggested to the group that some bumper stickers be made with the statement, Erika van der Westhuizen, the chairperson of the Dana Bay Conservancy, called her, asking if she would consider making these stickers under the umbrella of the conservancy, to which Hoffmann readily agreed.
Hoffmann said she is a conservancy member and a lover of all wildlife, from small insects and reptiles to large mammals.
She was able to find a business to sponsor the design of the bumper stickers, and 200 were printed. At R10 a sticker, all proceeds go to the Dana Bay Conservancy. While there are only a few left, Hoffmann said she would consider having more printed if there was a call for that.
Van der Westhuizen said she and the other members of the conservancy are grateful for those dedicated residents who take the initiative to promote conservation in their community.
“We appreciate Ashley’s passion for conserving and protecting our wildlife. We want to encourage others to share their conservation ideas that could potentially be deployed into practical solutions and efforts,” she said.
The stickers can be purchased at the Dana Bay vet, or from Van der Westhuizen at the conservancy, on 067 490 8396. Also phone this number should you wish to join the conservancy.
