MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Thembalethu Regional Court in George recently sentenced the 33-year-old Cheswayne Arendse to 10 years’ direct imprisonment after he was found guilty of robbing a man and threatening him with a hammer in Boplaas, Heiderand, in January 2024.
At about 17:30 on 22 January last year, two men approached the victim on foot in the Boplaas area. They threatened him with a hammer and stole just over R2 000, which was meant to buy him and his family some food.
A case of robbery with aggravating circumstances was registered at the Mossel Bay Police Station. Through the descriptions of the two robbers, Arendse was identified as a possible suspect.
In mid-February that year, Sergeant Thurston Amsterdam spotted Arendse near Dias Primary while out on patrol, and arrested him. Arendse was later identified as one of the robbers by the victim and a witness to the incident.
The second suspect was never identified.
Mossel Bay Police Station management have commended the solid investigative work of its detectives Sergeant Thurston Amsterdam and Sergeant Malwande Mose who both helped secure the conviction and the lengthy prison sentence.
