MOSSEL BAY NEWS - In the aftermath of the massive destructive fire at Mikeva Hyper in May, rumours have been circulating of a distribution centre to cater to wholesalers.
However, Brian Leroni, senior vice president of corporate affairs at Massmart Holdings, told Mossel Bay Advertiser that Massmart is currently exploring alternative options to serve the Mossel Bay community members, but that no final decisions have been made.
Massmart Holdings is the employer of more than 150 people who worked at Mikeva Hyper.
One of the representatives of the Mikeva Trust who owns the Mikeva Hyper centre, Stratos Kritzas, told the Advertiser that preliminary plans to restore the building were under way and that demolition is planned to commence soon, but this is still in the process of being finalised.
It is unclear at this stage when Mikeva will re-open its doors to the public.
Mossel Bay Advertiser previously reported that an arson docket was opened by the Da Gamaskop Police Station in Mossel Bay following the blaze.
The Southern Cape's police spokesperson, Sergeant Chris Spies, said no foul play is suspected as far as the cause of the fire is concerned.
A team of police forensic investigators from Cape Town had conducted an investigation on the scene shortly after the fire.
