KWANONQABA NEWS - One person has died in a house fire that broke out in KwaNonqaba during the early hours of Saturday 16 May. The fire reportedly spread to several surrounding houses in the area.
The Mossel Bay Fire, Rescue and Disaster Management teams responded to the scene, as well as the KwaNonqaba Police.
The victim’s body was discovered in one of the houses.
According to the spokesperson for the KwaNonqaba Police, Warrant Officer Kappie Kapp, the body was severely burnt - beyond recognition. The investigation into the victim’s identity is currently ongoing.
At this stage, the cause of the fire is as yet unknown, as well as how many homes had been affected altogether.
The Mossel Bay Municipality issued a statement on its official Facebook page on Sunday 17 May, asking for the community’s support following Saturday’s fire.
“We recognise the devastating impact of these incidents. Fires can spread rapidly between structures - one small flame can lead to widespread damage,” reads the statement.
The Department of Social Development has been activated and is working closely with the municipality to support the affected families.
The Mossel Bay community has been encouraged to support the affected families by donating clothing, non-perishable food, blankets, bedding and basic household essentials.
“Your contribution can help families begin to rebuild,” said the municipality.
The municipality has listed ways for all residents of Mossel Bay to remain vigilant and take extra care when it comes to fire prevention:
• Never leave candles burning unattended.
• Keep paraffin stoves and open flames away from bedding and clothing.
• Avoid illegal or unsafe electricity connections.
• Do not overload plugs or use damaged electrical cords.
• Keep water or sand nearby to put out small fires.
• Ensure children are supervised around open flames.
