MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Residents and visitors driving through the Midbrak area may have noticed the newly installed Midbrak Conservancy sign at one of the area's T-junctions.
The conservancy erected this sign last Friday, 8 May, and placed it in a prominent position to create more awareness of the conservancy among the residents and visitors, as well as its work and the important role the community plays in protecting the area's natural environment.
And to celebrate this new installation, the conservancy has designed a fun, engaging competition on social media with the hopes of also growing support for its Facebook page and increasing awareness for the work the conservancy does.
The conservancy is thus encouraging everyone to take photos of themselves, their family, friends, hiking or cycling groups or even their dogs at the sign. The winner will receive an installed dog waste bag dispenser for their street or walking area, supporting the conservancy's ongoing message that every small action contributes to a cleaner and more caring community.
To enter, participants must join the public Facebook group, Midbrak Conservancy/Bewarea, post the photo, use the hashtag #MidbrakConservancySign, tag the group and tag three friends.
The conservancy hopes the competition will encourage people to connect with the organisation and become more aware of the many ways they can contribute to local conservation, whether it's through membership, volunteering, participating in a clean-up, participating in a guided walk, sharing information, or simply picking up after a pet.
Exceptional biodiversity
The conservancy's area is located within the larger Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve, which is a Unesco biosphere reserve recognised for its exceptional biodiversity, endemic plants, wildlife and rich natural heritage. For those who live, work and relax in the area, this natural environment is part of what makes Midbrak so special.
The new sign aims to remind residents, homeowners, businesses and visitors that conservation is a shared responsibility and that the area's beauty can only be protected if the wider community gets involved.
The Midbrak Conservancy supports and promotes a range of conservation-focused activities, including invasive plant removal, habitat restoration, guided nature walks, beach and environmental clean-ups, educational projects, environmental workshops, newsletters and community representation in local environmental affairs.
Through these activities, the conservancy helps to protect the area's natural resources, while also encouraging residents to understand and appreciate the environment around them.
Membership is free, and membership options for estates and businesses in the area are available. Members support direct conservation actions and become part of a growing community of people who care about keeping Midbrak healthy, beautiful and sustainable through voluntary donations.
