MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Milkwood Primary School recently welcomed a new principal.
Hailing from East London in the Eastern Cape, Michael Carr is more than prepared for the job, having 30 years of education experience.
Speaking to Mossel Bay Advertiser, Carr, who has been in education since 1995, said he is loving both Milkwood Primary and Mossel Bay.
Born and raised in Durban, Carr describes Mossel Bay and its residents as "genuine and authentic". Like many of us, the only thing he can complain about is the traffic on Louis Fourie Road.
He says he never intended to be a school principal, but the wheels were set in motion when he was teaching at Hudson Park Primary in East London in 2002. A grade head was on extended leave and Carr was asked whom he thought should relieve him.
He was surprised to find himself in the job. He started at Hudson Park, teaching Grade Sevens. He worked there from 1999 to 2005.
"I then moved to Selborne Primary in 2006 and worked my way up. I became deputy headmaster in 2018." Carr came to Milkwood from Selborne Primary.
He has encountered a large number of people in his career - educators, parents and learners.
Many things within the teaching sector have changed over the years. Carr has noticed that parenting styles have definitely changed from when he was at school.
Speaking of the learners at Milkwood Primary, Carr says the children at the school are refreshing. He says he has been blown away by the staff's dedication.
"A lot of schools talk about values, but Milkwood actually lives those values," he says.
At this stage, he hasn't figured out his exact plan or vision for Milkwood Primary's future, but he says all he hopes for is the continued betterment of the school.
