MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Mossel Bay Care Centre celebrated its 11th birthday at its premises in Power Town, Little Brak River, on Tuesday 11 November.
The centre was founded by Jenny Bunyan and Delene Berry in 2014 and is run by them. Bunyan told the guests how the centre had started with just eight children in one container as a class.
Today, the centre has 37 children and several classrooms, including a computer room.
She said the premises is an aftercare centre for Power Town’s children, where they are able to complete their homework, use the computers, printer and Wi-Fi at the centre and get some playtime with their friends outside.
The centre also serves the children a meal every day.
Bunyan said some of the children who have attended the centre have gone on to study early childhood development and teaching, while one is working as a firefighter for the Mossel Bay Fire, Rescue and Disaster Management Services and another is due to start playing rugby in Bloemfontein next year.

Bunyan also spoke about some of the holiday and feeding programmes the centre runs, including the shoebox project, for which people volunteer to fill shoeboxes with gifts, and these presents are distributed among the children in the Power Town community.
The guests’ Tuesday celebrations included former Mossel Bay Municipality Mayor Marie Ferreira and the current mayor, Dirk Kotzé.
Bunyan said Ferreira had been at the opening of the centre, and she was happy to have her back for the 11th anniversary.
Ferreira thanked Bunyan and Berry for all their work. Kotzé also thanked the team for their decade of dedication to the centre.
He recognised those community members who have supported the centre, saying: “Often the most impactful leaders in our community are those without any official title.”
