MOSSEL BAY NEWS - All four police stations in the greater Mossel Bay have made the provincial top 30 in various categories in the most recent national crime statistics, the most notable being KwaNonqaba in 30th place for murder.
The second-quarter national crime statistics, which detail the crimes committed between July and September, were recently released by the police and show all the stations in the greater Mossel Bay had a minimal increase in murder cases, compared with last year.
KwaNonqaba Police Station, however, is the only Garden Route District station to appear in Western Cape's top 30, with 10 murders in three months. For last year's second quarter, KwaNonqaba had four murders, however, the year before, 2023, the station reported 14 - four more than this quarter.
The station with the most murders in the province and in the country is Mfuleni Police Station in the City of Cape Town District, 84 being reported in the second quarter this year.
The Da Gamaskop Police Station was one of two Garden Route District stations to be placed in the provincial top 30 for attempted murder, 12 cases being reported this quarter compared with last year's eight and 2023's two. Oudtshoorn, the other Garden Route station on the list, placed 18th.
KwaNonqaba also placed 24th in the province for the number of rape cases and 24th in the province in the category of robberies at non-residential premises.
Mossel Bay Police Station placed 28th in the province and 147th in the country for shoplifting cases.

Both KwaNonqaba and Great Brak River police stations were placed in the provincial top 30 for culpable homicide cases, KwaNonqaba at 23 and Great Brak at 30.
Mossel Bay, Da Gamaskop and KwaNonqaba were all in the top 30 for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Da Gamaskop was at 11, and 151st in the country, while Mossel Bay was at 22 and 210th in the country, and KwaNonqaba at 23 and 211th in the country.

Crime categories are set out as follows:
• Contact crimes are crimes committed against a person such as murder, sexual offences, attempted murder, assault GBH, common assault, common robbery or robbery with aggravating circumstances.
• Property-related crimes include burglary at a non-residential premises, burglary at a residential premises, theft of a motor vehicle or motorcycle, theft out of or from a motor vehicle and stock theft.
• Crimes detected as a result of police action include illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, drug-related crime, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or sexual offences detected as a result of police action.
Da Gamaskop
• Contact crimes against a person are down 24% (142 in 2023, 132 in 2024 and 100 in 2025)
• Property-related crimes are up 13% (108 in 2023, 61 in 2024 and 69 in 2025)
• Crimes detected as a result of police action are up by 55% (89 in 2023, 131 in 2024 and 203 in 2025).
Great Brak River
• Contact crimes are down by 19.8% (85 in 2023, 81 in 2024 and 65 in 2025)
• Property-related crime is three counts lower (46 cases in 2023, 21 in 2024 and 18 in 2025)
• Crimes detected as a result of police action are 33 counts higher (14 cases in 2023, 10 in 2024 and 43 in 2025).
KwaNonqaba
• Contact crimes are up by 13% (232 cases in 2023, 185 in 2024 and 209 in 2025)
• Property-related crime is down by 23.6% (94 in 2023, 89 in 2024 and 68 in 2025)
• Crimes detected as a result of police action are up by 2.3% (127 in 2023, 177 in 2024 and 181 in 2025).
Mossel Bay
• Contact crimes are down by 20 counts (54 in 2023, 45 in 2024 and 25 in 2025)
• Property-related crime remains the same as last year at 41 cases (44 in 2023, 41 in 2024 and 2025)
• Crimes detected as a result of police action are up by six counts, or 5.4% (93 in 2023, 112 in 2024 and 118 in 2025).
