MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The police stations in the greater Mossel Bay area came out on top in an impressive eight categories at the annual Garden Route District Excellence Awards.
The awards recognised the SAPS personnel for their extraordinary efforts in their respective environments.
It was held at the George Methodist Family Church on Wednesday 5 November and hosted by the Garden Route District Police Commissioner, Major General Phumzile Cetyana.
In attendance were the district police management, station commanders, unit commanders, police officials, administrative personnel and the CPFs’ leaders. Altogether 21 police stations attached to the district were represented.
Great Brak Police Station was announced as the station of the year, and KwaNonqaba Police Station was the first runner-up.
Great Brak’s Sergeant Lauriane Botha was awarded the first runner-up for the woman of the year, and Da Gamaskop’s Lieutenant Colonel Maria Gerber placed third.
KwaNonqaba Police Reservist Constable Donovan Duitsjan was awarded the first runner-up for reservist of the year.
Da Gamaskop and Mossel Bay police stations’ members received multiple awards.
Gerber was also announced detective and forensic employee (level 8-12) of the year, while Sergeant Thurston Amsterdam of the Mossel Bay Police was awarded detective and forensic employee (level 5-7) of the year.
The detective and forensic team of the year are the Da Gamaskop detectives. The first runner-up was the Garden Route detective team, which included Sergeant Ruhan du Plooy of the Mossel Bay Police Station. Great Brak’s detectives earned themselves the second runner-up position for this category.
Captain Carel Cornelius and Sergeant Elwynand Karelse of Da Gamaskop won the catch of the year award.
Mossel Bay Police Station’s Captain Jonanne Meyer was awarded sportswoman of the year, and the station’s Constable Jürgen van Staden was given the employee with a disability of the year award.
Suanda Fouché of the Mossel Bay Police Station, was announced the first runner-up for administration employee (level 1-4) of the year, and Shireen Hendricks, also of Mossel Bay, was awarded the second runner-up (level 5-7).
Nogcina Khohliwe of Da Gamaskop was announced administration employee of the year (level 8-12).
The Da Gamaskop CPF was awarded the first runner-up for the CPF of the year.
Cetyana concluded the programme with a congratulatory message to the winners in their respective categories and lauded everyone who received awards.
“I have immense pride in the hard-working, loyal and committed SAPS members in the district, with a wealth of experience among them,” he said.
“These teams are supported by exceptional external role players, an effective community policing machine and several community safety structures. Their efforts are evident in the number of successes achieved during the past year. As we enter the festive period, we look forward to having everyone on board as part of our Safer Festive Season plan to safeguard our communities.”
