Update
MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A section of Marsh Street, between Mitchell and Meyer streets, in the central business district, was closed to traffic temporarily on Sunday, 29 September, due to a fuel spill at a petrol station.
Mossel Bay Fire and Rescue Services promptly responded to a call received shortly after 13:00 and cleaned up the spill. The road was reopened to traffic by 14:15.
According to the owner of the filling station, Frik Hayward, a small seal leaked inside a pump and spilled about 20 litres of fuel.
Hayward said it was the first incident in twenty years and emergency procedure was immediately initiated. The Mossel Bay Fire and Rescue Services and Traffic Department were called in and the area cordoned off until Fire and Rescue Services contained and cleared the spill. Due to rain it was a matter of urgency to clean up the spill and reduce any fire risk. The seal was replaced by a technician and tested to be 100% safe.
"In a previous incident that was not connected to the petrol station, a truck leaked fuel in the road in front of the petrol station. Unfortunately a photo was taken with the petrol station in the background and people on social media ran away with the story," said Hayward.
Mossel Bay Fire and Rescue Services promptly responded to the call.
Rescue services cleaned up the spill.
