GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - An evening of fascinating stories awaits on Saturday 18 October at 18:00 at Diaz Hotel and Resort, Mossel Bay, where funds will be raised for NSRI Station 15 and Fort Outeniqua.
Hosted by members of the South African Special Forces Association, the event honours both Fort Outeniqua and NSRI Station 15 with extraordinary accounts of bravery and an enduring legacy.
The programme opens with a tribute to Station 15 of the National Sea Rescue Institute, established more than 50 years ago by Ian Hamilton. Ian, who led the station until 2018, will share its remarkable beginnings and growth over the decades.
Genl (Rtd) John More, one of only four surviving founding members of the South African Special Forces (formed in 1970), will recall the early years of the unit and its indirect links to Station 15.
The main speaker, Douw Steyn, former Operational Commander in 4 Special Forces Regiment and co-author of Iron Fist from the Sea, will deliver a gripping account of South Africa’s clandestine seaborne operations before and during the Border War.
Drawing on previously classified material, he will recount daring missions, strategic successes and sobering setbacks from Cabinda on the West Coast of Africa to Tanzania on the East Coast.
This promises to be an unforgettable evening of insight, reflection and inspiration.
