MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Because of violent crime involving local ambulance services as the target, a crime prevention awareness campaign was launched in KwaNonqaba last week.
Due to attacks on members of local emergency services who responded to calls in the area, Government Communication and Information Systems (GCIS), initiated the campaign.
A door to door campaign was implemented in collaboration with other departments, involving the KwaNonqaba Police, Metro EMS and the Department of Correctional Services.
According to Sgt Kappie Kapp, the spokesperson of the KwaNonqaba Police, the campaign was aimed to curb the violence towards emergency services personnel. "If these attacks continue, the area could be declared a red zone.
"In this case ambulances will not be allowed to come into the area, for their own safety. During the campaign we wanted to convey to the community that, even during war, it is a no-no to attack those wearing the red cross, saving lives."
Sergeant Kapp said that during the door to door campaign, they worked their way through the streets to also inform the community regarding the value to being part of a neighbourhood watch and joining a street committee.
"We encouraged the community to take back the streets and make them safe again."
