MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Western Cape Minister of Education, David Maynier, paid a visit to Point High School on Thursday 30 October, as a result of the school's recent decision to extend its policy that bans cellphones.
The minister was interested to hear more about the school's reasons for this decision, as well as how it went about implementing the policy.
"It is encouraging to hear that the school has seen im-provements in learner results and social interactions as a result of the new approach, and there are lessons that other schools can draw on if they are considering implementing a similar cellphone-free zone," he said.
Maynier was accompanied by the Western Cape's Education Circuit manager, Rozelle Smith-Neethling, as well as Jewel Jonkers, director of the Eden and Central Karoo Education Department (Ecked).
In a previous Facebook post sharing the news, the school wrote that the policy, which became effective on 3 September, aims to strengthen academic focus, promote social interaction and protect the learners' mental health.
"Point High has demonstrated that it is possible to practically and responsibly reduce this impact while taking into account safety concerns and e-learning needs," said Maynier.
The news has sparked debate among the Mossel Bay community, with many stating why they are for or against the school's decision.
