MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Bystanders came to the rescue of two people, a 30-year-old woman and a 12-year-old boy, who were involved in a near drowning incident on Friday 19 December at Diaz Beach in Mossel Bay.
The woman and the boy are believed to be related.
According to the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), the Mossel Bay NSRI Station 15 was alerted of the incident following eye-witness reports of a drowning in progress at the beach that evening.
Upon the arrival of the NSRI and emergency medical services, the two had been rescued from the water by bystanders.
"They were both suffering non-fatal drowning symptoms," said Station 15 Operations Controller, Andre Fraser.
NSRI rescue swimmers, the Western Cape Government Health Emergency Medical Services (EMS) as well as the Mossel Bay Fire, Rescue and Disaster Management Services responded to the scene.
According to Fraser, the boy was in a stable condition and the woman in a serious but stable condition.
Both were transported to a hospital for further treatment.
The NSRI has commended the bystanders on the beach for their efforts that helped in saving two lives.
