MOSSEL BAY - In an effort to create some buzz about conservation in the area, the Dana Bay Conservancy recently commissioned an artist to paint a mural at a bus shelter along Flora Road in Dana Bay.
"We wanted to think outside the box in creating greater awareness around the fact that we stay in an urban conservancy," said the Dana Bay Conservancy's chairperson, Erika van der Westhuizen.
"At the same time, it beautifies the area and becomes a talking point between residents and visitors."
Van der Westhuizen said earlier this year, a new board with information on the conservancy was erected in the area, however, she felt more can be done to create awareness and draw the eyes of residents and holidaymakers.
She said the conservancy was established in 1998 and is blessed with natural fynbos, beautiful beaches, green belts, birdlife and endemic wildlife.
Van der Westhuizen added that creating awareness, sharing information and education are key to preserving our natural resources.

"The mural is a celebration of our natural heritage."
She said the conservancy had approached Mossel Bay artist Schaun Mc Arthur to paint the mural.
He said it took him about two weeks to complete and that the entire process was enjoyable.
"I have never seen so much support from the community in all my years as a mural artist [since 2014]. It was an amazing experience," he said.
Van der Westhuizen said they were looking at the possibility of commissioning more murals around Dana Bay in the coming months. If you would like to join the Dana Bay Conservancy, call or send a WhatsApp to 067 490 8396.
