MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A local author, who suffered sexual abuse as a child and then severe addiction, is on a quest to help change lives.
Janine Haun, who resides in Dana Bay, had nearly fatal cirrhosis of the liver, from which she miraculously recovered.
She published her life story in a book, Three Steps to Heaven, which she co-wrote with her mother. After the translation of the book into Afrikaans due to its popularity, Haun was also asked if the book could be turned into a film.
She has since begun studying for a Master's degree in pastoral narrative therapy part-time, through the University of Pretoria.
Haun explains that the lecturers of the course found her life story fascinating.
"They invited me to join the course as an observer, so that I could join in the next academic year."
Narrative therapy is a new development away from conventional psychology, based on the person's story. "We see each person as unique and an expert of their own story. It is a non-judgmental and respectful method and involves no diagnosis."
Haun says people are extremely resourceful in finding an alternative positive story when they are introduced to the guidelines of narrative therapy.
"We have established a non-profit organisation called Caritas and are busy establishing non-profit counselling centres in Mossel Bay and George."
Due to cost involved, the film version of Three Steps to Heaven, has not materialised.
"I have been offered a discounted price to do a video to talk about my journey, which I now believe has tremendous potential for healing. I know this video, being given to places who are trying to help people who have suffered abuse, can be a tremendous tool."
Haun is welcoming any type of sponsorship or partnership to achieve her goal. "Due to my studies and voluntary counselling, I am unable to raise the amount needed singlehandedly." Anyone who would like to make contact with Haun can email her at janine9.oliver@gmail.com.
