MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The talented young boxer, Enenceba Mfeketho (14) of the Asla Park-based Garden Route Boxing Club, brought home a gold medal from the South African National Boxing Organisation Championships recently held in Rustenburg in the North West.
Enenceba, who is a learner at Hillcrest Secondary School in Mossel Bay, had earned three gold medals in the provincial tournament and went on to represent the Western Cape in the nationals, where he beat out top boxers from across the country and won gold.
His coach, Masimphiwe Qatu, said both Enenceba and his fellow boxer Qhamani Madolo have won gold medals at provincial and national championships in various divisions in previous months and years.
Qhamani was supposed to defend the national gold medal he won last year, but he was unfortunately disqualified due to a technical issue with his medical record book.
Qatu said some other boxers from the club who represented the province were Olothando Tukutezi, Junior Mbutuma, Siyamthanda Madolo, Asenathi Mzathi and Yakhanani Maphathwana. They, too, were disqualified for the same reason.
Qatu said there are some challenges for not only his boxers, but also those from across the country when it comes to their medical record books, especially when they have been issued by state clinics.

He said several other competitors from other provinces were also disqualified for the same reasons.
The coach said the club practices every weekday evening at 5200 Sekhukhuni Street, Asla Park. He said the club is supported by the Mossel Bay Municipality and local trusts who give equipment and make donations, and helped ensure the club's boxers were able to make it to the championship.
"We are grateful for the support from the Mossel Bay Sport Council, as well as Piet Julies and Manfred Lutter. They have made a significant impact on our athletes' development. Without their assistance, we wouldn't be where we are today," said Qatu.
