MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Young people of Mossel Bay who formed part of a life-changing, challenging and exciting programme when they become incumbents of the Mayoral Youth Advancement Project, are ready to spread their wings and take on the real world.
For 12 months these young people were given the opportunity to gain experience in the workplace and to grow as individuals in the roles they were given.
From working in communications, IT, to the legal department and even getting to learn how to change a circuit breaker, the five were hands on and excelled at the opportunities they were given.
Within the following week, however, their time as interns will come to an end and the big wide world is beckoning.
Here then an opportunity presents itself to businesses in Mossel Bay to benefit from the on-the-job training that these five interns were given, to offer them a job. Soon they will complete the last hurdle - obtain a driver's licence.
"We hope that the time spent in a real work, real world environment will stand them in good stead with prospective employers who will benefit from the experience, discipline and dedication they have gained," a municipal spokesperson said.
Nosibusiso Tyindyi spent time in the communications department, where she learnt all about corporate communications, minute taking, preparing internal newsletters and worked on the monthly municipal newsletter.
She took and prepared photos for publications and liaised with the local media. Nevertheless, she says she envisages a career in public participation, where liaising with the community makes a difference in the lives of ordinary people.
Nangamso Madikane.
Nangamso Madikane worked in the very structured world of the legal eagles at the municipality.
She has gained a deep respect for the rules, regulations and legislation that governs the local government environment, where her proficiency in MS Word stood her in good stead. She sees herself excelling in a world of law enforcement and would dearly like to become a police officer.
Aphiwe James.
Aphiwe James gained experience in the technical department, where he did the hard slog - from digging trenches to changing circuit breakers. This young man now has a healthy understanding of the work done by electricians.
With a number of N1 subjects in electrical trade theory, engineering science and industrial electronics, Aphiwe, with a penchant for mathematics, sees himself having a career in this field.
Damian Roberts.
Damian Roberts enjoyed working in the IT department, where he was given the opportunity to learn from a dedicated team.
He enjoyed network maintenance, coding, working with technicians who manage and write intricate programmes and being on the help desk, where he helped handle everyday complaints from IT users. He sees himself as a future IT boffin, who will be a true asset to his employer.
Jade Jacobs.
Jade Jacobs considers joining a local or district municipality so that he may be allowed to train as a traffic officer.
With a penchant for law enforcement, the only obstacle keeping him from achieving his dream is a valid driver's licence. This he aims to add to his list of achievements before leaving the internship programme.
All of the interns completed short courses on conflict management, work ethics, time management, project management and ICT as part of the programme. In addition, they gained lots of people skills while helping out with the municipal holiday programmes, the Mayoral Cup golf benefit event, and the World Food Day event.
