MOSSEL BAY NEWS - At the age of 16, Sirah Visagé has established a small business which brings in good pocket money and soon she will be inspiring other women to do the same.
Mossel Bay Advertiser spotted paper roses for sale at the Mediclinic George and asked who had made and supplied the flowers.
The Advertiser found out it was young Sirah.
Idea
These "forever flowers", as Sirah calls them, do not shed petals or leaves, they don't wilt and die, they don't need water and they don't need to be removed from hospital rooms at night.
Sirah, who is studying for her GED qualification online, started creating paper roses while in primary school.
A friend showed her how to make them from books which are no longer needed or which are damaged.
Entrepreneurial Sirah makes roses in various sizes and charges R10 to R25 for a rose.
"I have made them for weddings, for Valentine's Day and matric farewells," Sirah told the Advertiser.
Humble
When asked if she makes good money from her hobby, says is humble, saying "it's adequate".
Soon Sirah will be showing a group of women how to make the roses, so they can also make money, selling them.
She will be demonstrating her craft for beneficiaries of Wild Mongoo, is a retail-based project in George which empowers vulnerable women by providing work and skills training.
Sirah usually makes 20 roses at a time and this takes her two hours.
Musical
Besides being good at this, Sirah is also musical and plays the piano, guitar, base guitar and saxophone. To find out more about Sirah's forever flowers, contact her mother, Lizell (082 898 8441 or gglizell@gmail.com).
