WESTERN CAPE NEWS - A total of 16 people died in seven accidents on the province’s roads during the Woman’s Day long weekend from 7 to 10 August. Last year 14 lives were lost.
According to Jandré Bakker, head of communications for the Department of Transport and Public Works, 75 integrated road blocks, vehicle checkpoints and speed control operations were held during which 7 786 vehicles were stopped and checked.
112 speeding offences were recorded and 1 139 fines were issued for various traffic violations, ranging from driver to vehicle fitness, to the total amount of R1 042 650. Six vehicles were impounded and 17 were discontinued for not being roadworthy.
Two people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, six for fraudulent documentation, two for reckless and/or negligent driving and one person was arrested for the possession of 740kg of dagga.
Highest speeds recorded
• 159km/h in a 120km/h zone
• 139km/h in a 100km/h zone
• 124km/h in a 80km/h zone
• 84km/h in a 60km/h zone
Disaster Management Act
A total of 26 charges were laid under the Disaster Management Act and fines to the value of R39 500 were issued. Three arrests were made for the transportation of liquor and tobacco.
