MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Indwe Secondary School narrowly missed out on qualifying for the provincial finals of the Kay Motsepe Schools Football Championship.
The school's U19 soccer team faced off against Plettenberg Bay's Murray High in Mossel Bay on Saturday 15 August, and lost the regional final after penalty shoot-outs, ending 5-4 in Plett's favour.
The finale got off at a fast pace with both sides pressing for more chances.
Amuwoelang Mohlakala of Indwe scored the first goal after beating Murray High goalkeeper Lindokuhle Makaune. Both teams were playing attacking football, going straight into the box. Siyabonga Goliath of Murray High levelled the score to 1-1, and his teammate, Alithemba Dlisani, secured a 2-1 lead before half-time.
The second half was on fire as both sides were looking sharp on the wings. Lindokuhle, however, made a careless mistake inside the box. He lost control of the ball and allowed Indwe's Milamzi Sabhongo to steal it from his feet to level the score on 2-2. Ironically, it was the same Milamzi who missed his penalty shot, allowing Murray High to advance to the provincial play-offs.
Indwe's coach, Jogo Beja, said the tournament was not that difficult for his players and that they were very sharp and prepared. They were confident they would earn a place in the play-offs, but he said it was just not their day to beat Murray High.
