NATIONAL NEWS AND VIDEO - South African music legend, Johnny Clegg, passed away today (Tuesday 16 July).
He was 66.
He was known for his hits, 'Great Heart', 'Scatterlings of Africa' and 'Impi' - to name but a few.
Clegg was also a dancer, anthropologist, singer, songwriter, academic, activist and French knight and a member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE), according to his official website, www.johnnyclegg.com.
The British-born South African music legend has performed on all four of Nelson Mandela’s 46664 Aids Awareness Concerts in South Africa and in Norway.
Mandela has joined him on stage during the rendition of 'Asimbonanga', a song written by Clegg about Mandela (and other struggle heroes) during his period of incarceration.
Whilst lecturing Anthropology at the University of the Witwatersrand, he worked on the concept of blending English lyrics and Western melodies with Zulu musical structures.
