MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Da Gamaskop Police have arrested two men, one a 77-year-old, in Hartenbos yesterday, 20 January, for the possession of unlicensed firearms.
The Southern Cape Police’s spokesperson, Warrant Officer Chris Spies, said the officers had received some information about illegal activities at a premises in Hartenbos.
They found a man in possession of an unlicensed .22 rifle, which they confiscated. The man was arrested on a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm.
Further investigations led the police to a property in Hendrik Herbst Street, Hartenbos, later that evening.
“A search of the premises led to the discovery of a shotgun, a firearm barrel and two rounds of ammunition,” said Spies.
“The members confiscated the items and arrested a 77-year-old man on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.”
Both men remain in police custody and are expected to make their first court appearance in the Mossel Bay Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, 22 January.
“These confiscations are in line with the policing priorities of the Western Cape, to rid communities of unlicensed firearms that threaten the safety of the public,” Spies said.
