MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Stranded Marine Animal Rescue Team (Smart) held its AGM at the Dias Museum on 27 June, celebrating another successful year of marine conservation and rescue efforts.
Chairperson Anton Dellemijn presented his annual report, highlighting the organisation’s achievements, ongoing projects and future goals.
He expressed his sincere appreciation to all Smart volunteers for their dedication, hard work and countless hours spent responding to stranded marine animals along the Southern Cape coastline.
He also thanked the businesses, sponsors, donors and members of the public whose continued support makes Smart’s work possible. Special recognition was given to beachgoers who report stranded marine animals, playing a vital role in ensuring animals receive assistance as quickly as possible.
Smart’s marine education programme remains one of its flagship projects, with volunteers visiting schools to teach learners about marine wildlife, conservation and protecting the ocean. A highlight for the children is always meeting Sammy, Smart’s popular sea turtle mascot, who brings marine conservation to life in a fun and engaging way.
The organisation is also proud to have maintained a 100% clean financial record over the past 10 years, demonstrating responsible financial management and accountability. Smart said without the generosity of donors and sponsors, it would not be able to continue its important conservation work.
One of the directors, Dr Frans de Graaff, spoke about the crucial role Smart volunteers play as first responders to stranded marine animals. He highlighted the new challenges facing marine wildlife, including rabies in Cape fur seals and the recent confirmation of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in seals. He also acknowledged the outstanding support provided by Hartenbos Animal Hospital in assisting with these important conservation efforts.
Smart encourages anyone with a passion for marine conservation to become involved in the organisation.
“Our marine animals need all of us. Together, we can make a difference,” said the organisation.
