Update
MOSSEL BAY NEWS - While the discussions about the future of the old power station at Little Brak River continue, the Mossel Bay Municipality has reiterated that its immediate priority is to reduce the safety risks at this dilapidated building.
Mossel Bay Advertiser had previously reported that the future of this old landmark currently hangs in the balance. The Mossel Bay Municipal Council has to decide whether to refurbish or demolish the building, pending reports to be submitted to it.
Responding to a recent follow-up query from the Advertiser, the municipality said: "The immediate priorities for the Power Town building are to reduce the safety risks to the surrounding community and to secure the structure for future planning initiatives."
It said the vegetation, especially the trees growing into and on the building, has compromised the structural integrity of certain parts of the old station, and that this requires urgent attention.
"Long-term planning for the building will depend on a comprehensive assessment of multiple factors. These investigations will be concluded in a report to Council to assist with determining the building's viability, constraints and potential future uses, informing a sustainable and appropriate redevelopment strategy," it said.
