MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Following the devastating fire at Mikeva Hyper earlier this week, a prayer meeting was arranged for community members.
Concerned residents of Mossel Bay gathered behind the now temporarily closed store at 09:30 this morning, 29 May.
Mikeva Hyper is well known in Mossel Bay as an affordable wholesaler, servicing communities in and around Mossel Bay.
Belinda Michaels, a former employee, said she feels heartbroken over what has happened. She had worked at Mikeva for 34 years, since 1989 until 2023.
Other residents, frequent shoppers at Mikeva, echoed Michaels’ feelings, saying they were worried about the rising cost of groceries and how this will impact their families and small businesses.
When asked if they will now travel to George for their wholesale shopping, some said they did not want to.
Although Mossel Bay is home to other retail stores, many say they are too expensive. “We are unsure what to do now,” they said.
Earlier this morning, a meeting was held with Mikeva’s employees and management in the shop’s parking area to discuss the next steps. Read more about what was said in this meeting in this week’s edition of Mossel Bay Advertiser.
