Update
MOSSEL BAY NEWS - In a statement addressed to its "stakeholders" on 18 October, PetroSA gave reasons why there are more tankers anchored in the bay than usual and why the tankers are spending several days in the bay.
This week there were five tankers anchored offshore of Mossel Bay town.
PetroSA noted that the "diesel and unleaded petrol tankers" were delivering product "as per plans of ensuring there is security of energy supply in South Africa".
It noted the tankers were "on board to deliver diesel to PetroSA in order to supply key customers".
The statement pointed out: "There have been delays in discharging due to weather and storage facilities, however, plans are under way to ensure that the product is released as planned. One tanker is carrying ULP95, which will be discharged as per the planned operational arrangements.
"PetroSA is committed to ensuring the nation is powered and there is security of energy supply by supporting Eskom in ending loadshedding."
PetroSA claimed these two factors contributed to the higher than usual number of tankers:
- "PetroSA is ensuring the balancing of demand and supply as it fulfils its obligations of providing diesel to Eskom as contracted; and
- "As there is limited storage, PetroSA has undertaken a process of using floating tankers to ensure that product is readily available as and when required, according to forecasts as agreed with Eskom."
