MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The National Sea Rescue Institute’s (NSRI) Station 15 in Mossel Bay helped with the medical evacuation of a 47-year-old man on board a ship on Monday 13 October.
According to Michelle Roos, coxswain of the NSRI, at 13:30 yesterday afternoon, the Transnet National Ports Authority’s (TNPA) Port Control at the Mossel Bay Harbour alerted the NSRI to prepare for the medical evacuation of the man, who was suffering from a medical condition.
At that stage, the ship was 50 nautical miles from Mossel Bay.
The man was in the care of the medical crew and EMS duty doctor on board, who deemed him to be in a serious condition and requiring urgent evacuation to a hospital.
The ship was instructed to speed on towards Mossel Bay.
At midnight, the NSRI crew were activated to begin launching its rescue crafts.
At 01:37 on Tuesday 14 October, two NSRI rescue crafts were launched, accompanied by maritime extrication crews and EMS rescue paramedics.
The man, now in a critical but stable condition, was successfully transferred from the ship onto the NSRI’s rescue craft.
Two ambulances were dispatched to the Station 15 rescue base, located at the Mossel Bay Harbour.
Upon arrival, the paramedics evaluated the man’s condition, while a high-angle extrication device was rigged to get him onto land quickly.
He was then transported to hospital by ambulance for further medical care.
