MOSSEL BAY NEWS - As South Africa braces for possible protest action today, 30 June, the supposed ‘deadline’ set by anti-immigration groups for undocumented immigrants to leave the country, the Mossel Bay Municipality has assured residents that, at this stage, there is no reason for panic or alarm.
According to a notice issued by the municipality yesterday, 29 June, residents were cautioned of potential public demonstrations today, as a result of the ‘deadline’.
This morning at 08:30, another notice reported no protest-related incidents in Mossel Bay.
As seen in a video shared by the municipality, a strong police presence has been deployed throughout Mossel Bay’s communities to ensure close monitoring of the situation by the police, relevant municipal departments, neighbourhood watch groups and private security services.
Specific areas in Mossel Bay that have been marked as hotspots for possible protest action include the Asla Park taxi rank, the KwaNonqaba New taxi rank, Cuba informal settlements and Barcelona Circle in KwaNonqaba.
“All monitored areas remain calm and operational,” said the municipality. “No signs of illegal gatherings or unrest [have been observed] and all spaza and tuck shops within monitored areas remain open and operational.”
Mossel Bay residents are reminded to follow official, verified sources of information, including the municipality’s various channels of communication, such as its WhatsApp channel and Facebook page.
Further updates are expected to follow as the day progresses.
