MOSSEL BAY NEWS - KwaNonqaba Police Station detective, Sergeant Melvin Niemand, recently helped secure a 12-year prison sentence for a man who was guilty of murdering Siphenathi Nqono (33) in 2020.
The man, Sabelo Zulu (38), was sentenced to 12 years' imprisonment by the Mossel Bay Regional Court on 3 December last year.
Zulu was arrested the same night that Nqono was killed, 3 October 2020, and has remained in custody since his arrest.
He was found guilty of stabbing Nqono in the neck. Nqono, Zulu and others had been drinking together at a home in New Rest that evening, when Zulu allegedly became unruly.
Zulu was asked to leave the home by Nqono after the other people in the home began complaining about Zulu's behaviour.
Zulu was pushed out of the house and left, but arrived back at the dwelling a few hours later and stabbed Nqono in the neck. Nqono died while being rushed to hospital.
KwaNonqaba Police Station management commended Niemand on the conviction and said it was the detective's hard work and dedication that led to the arrest, and the 12-year sentence of the murderer.
