MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Three people have been arrested after they allegedly attacked a man with a panga in the Sonskyn Vallei area last Thursday, 3 July.
The incident took place just after 08:00 that morning.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie said that preliminary information suggests that on the morning of the incident, a 20-year-old man was on his way to work when he was approached by three men, aged 29, 34 and 25.
"It is alleged that one of the suspects called the victim and said he wanted to talk without fighting."
Pojie said the victim went to him and asked what he had done wrong, referring to an incident from a few days prior.
He said the victim tried to talk to the man before the second suspect grabbed him in a tight grip, while the first suspect sprayed pepper spray in his eyes before pushing him to the ground.
Pojie said it is further alleged that the third suspect then approached, took a panga from his pants and struck the victim over the head with the sharp side.
He said the three men then fled the scene, leaving the victim behind.
The 20-year-old man sustained an open wound on the head and right arm, and was bleeding from his head and right hand.
Pojie said the interaction began with a reference to an incident that occurred a few days prior, suggesting a pre-existing conflict.
A case of attempted murder was opened at the Da Gamaskop Police Station and the three were arrested at 08:41 the following day, 4 July.
The men appeared in the Mossel Bay Magistrate's Court on Monday, 7 July where the case was postponed to 21 July for a formal bail application.
