MOSSELBAAI NUUS - Mossel Bay scientist, researcher and community advocate Zwelakhe 'Zweli' Mhlongo will be participating in the 100-miler (167km) race of the RMB Ultra-trail Cape Town, taking place on 22 November.
Mhlongo is the founder of the Zweli-Bags for Children with Cancer Initiative, providing curated care packages to children undergoing cancer treatment in Cape Town.
The children are regularly shuttled from Mossel Bay to Cape Town for treatment.
By participating in the 100-miler, Mhlongo will be raising funds to support the first round of care packages, known as Zweli-Bags. The packages will be donated to children with cancer at the Mossel Bay Provincial Hospital.
Each bag contains essentials and comfort items such as blankets, snacks, activity books, hygiene products and handwritten notes, to uplift these young patients during their treatment journey.
The 100-miler takes participants from the northern mountain range of Cape Town to the more remote southern mountains, as well as additional trails from Silvermine, Kalk Bay, Kommetjie, Simon's Town and beyond.
