MOSSEL BAY NEWS - An emotional memorial service was held at the Holy Nativity Anglican Church in Mossel Bay in honour of Sergeant Collin Mongezi Sboza, a member of the Mossel Bay Police, on Tuesday 18 August.
Sboza, who had served in the South African Police Service for 15 years, died on 10 August after battling an undisclosed illness.
Several of his family, friends and colleagues came together in honour of his life, including the Garden Route District’s police commissioner, Major General Phumzile Cetyana.
“Losing a loved one is never easy, and the pain is made even greater when we lose someone who has been part of our family,” said Cetyana.
Sboza’s career in the police began in Nuwerus, a small town in the Western Cape, in 2011.

He was then transferred to the Vredendal Police in 2013, where he served until he was transferred to the Mossel Bay Police Station in 2025.
His colleagues described him as a quiet and humble man, always with a smile on his face and dedicated to serving his community well.
“Behind that quiet demeanour was a person who simply tried to do his job to the best of his ability,” said Cetyana.
The Mossel Bay Police’s station commander, Lieutenant Colonel Ashley Michaels, said although she only worked with Sboza this past year, she was grateful that she got to know him and would always remember him fondly.

Sboza’s mother lit a candle in remembrance of her son. He leaves behind a young son, whom he spoke of with immense pride.
His funeral will be held tomorrow, Saturday 22 August.
