MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The KwaNonqaba Police Station is the only station in the Garden Route District to be placed in the provincial top 30 for the number of murder cases reported within its precinct.
This is according to the recently released third-quarter national crime statistics that detail the crimes committed between October and December last year.
KwaNonqaba placed 29th with 10 murder cases reported in that three-month period, three cases more than 2024’s third quarter, but four cases fewer than 2023’s.
The station at the number one spot for the highest number of murders in the province, and in the entire country, is Mfuleni, which falls under the City of Cape Town District. This station’s third-quarter reported 75 murders in three months.
KwaNonqaba also placed 30th in the province for the number of cases of assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm (assault GBH) - 69. The most cases in the province is Worcester, which placed third in the country in this category with 253.
KwaNonqaba placed 30th for burglaries at residential premises, with 55 cases, and 28th in the Western Cape for common assault, recording 146 cases.
Mossel Bay Police Station is 28th in the province for shoplifting cases and KwaNonqaba is 29th, although both stations reported 21 cases in the third quarter - Mossel Bay up by four and KwaNonqaba down by five.
A look at the crime statistics at stations within the greater Mossel Bay area
Da Gamaskop Police Station
There was an overall decrease in the number of reported crimes at the Da Gamaskop Police Station. Contact crimes, which are crimes such as murder, sexual offences, attempted murder, assault GBH, common assault, common robbery and robbery with aggravating circumstances, went down by 12.6%.
Contact-related crimes, such as arson and malicious damage to property, also decreased by six counts from last year’s third quarter.
Property-related crimes reported to the station, including burglary at a non-residential and burglary at a residential premises, theft of a motor vehicle or motorcycle, theft out of a motor vehicle and stock theft, saw a major decrease of 50.4%.
Crimes uncovered as a result of police detection was the only crime category to show an increase. This includes cases of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, drug-related crime, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and sexual offences detected as a result of police action. These cases went up by 10.9%. The category ‘other serious crimes’, which includes commercial crime, shoplifting and all theft not mentioned elsewhere, also saw a major decrease, going down by 53.9%.
Great Brak River Police Station
Great Brak saw an 8.2% drop in the number of contact crimes reported compared with last year’s third quarter. Contact-related crimes increased overall by 10 cases and property-related crime showed no difference in the number of cases reported the previous year’s quarter, which was 29. The number of other serious crimes went up by five counts and crimes detected as a result of police action went up by three counts.
KwaNonqaba Police Station
There was a slight general increase in cases across the crime categories at KwaNonqaba Police Station, with an 18.9% increase in the number of contact crime cases reported. Contact-related crimes showed a decrease of four cases compared with last year’s third quarter and property-related crimes saw a 19.6% decrease. Other serious crime cases went down by 20.4% and crimes detected as a result of police action increased 6.3%.
Mossel Bay Police Station
The number of contact crimes reported to the Mossel Bay Police Station this last third quarter decreased by 12.9%. Contact-related crime also decreased by five counts and other serious crimes by a significant 40.7%. Crimes detected as a result of police action decreased by 9.3% and property-related crime, the only category to show an increase, went up by two counts.
