MOSSEL BAY NEWS - During the holiday season you can expect this from the Mossel Bay Municipality.
Beaches
During the peak holiday season, public ablution facilities on beaches are open from 07:00 to 09:00.
Cleaning teams ensuring the ablution facilities and beaches remain shipshape, are on duty from 08:00 to 17:00, seven days a week.
During the peak season, however, the number of cleaners is increased to address the higher demand for service.
Should any marine animals be found stranded, members of the public can contact the volunteer organisation, the Stranded Marine Animal Rescue Team (S.M.A.R.T.) (072 227 4715).
This includes sea turtles, seals, penguins, and other marine animals that are in distress. Should a dead marine animal be found, the Mossel Bay Municipality can be contacted (044 606 5000).
Lifeguards are on duty between 09:00 and 18:00 on 23 local beaches during the summer holidays. Members of the public are urged to be mindful of the lifeguards’ instructions at all times.
Do not swim at beaches where lifeguards are not deployed, nor swim before or after they have left the beach. Swimming is at its own risk. Please note, in particular, that there are no lifeguards on duty at Dana Bay. Due to strong currents, this beach is not advised for swimming.
Access control points are implemented at several beaches, including Blue Flag beaches during the holidays. Patrols on the beaches are done on foot, on horseback and quad bikes are also deployed to ensure public safety and adherence to the necessary legislative requirements. No alcohol is allowed at beaches. Beachgoers will be requested by access control staff at the checkpoint, to declare if they have any alcohol with them.
Dogs are not freely allowed on all local beaches. For a comprehensive list of do’s and don’ts, visit the news section of the municipal website Click here to visit the website
Any traffic and law enforcement issues may be reported directly to 044 606 5204 or the general municipal switchboard and call centre number (044 606 5000).
Refuse removal
Waste management teams will continue their services throughout the festive season and all public holidays. Residents and visitors are reminded to place their refuse out just before 07:00 on their collection day. Garbage bags placed out the night before often get tampered with and cause unnecessary littering and hygiene issues. The Mossel Bay Municipality uses a three-bag system – black bags for non-recyclable, wet household waste; green bags for garden waste; and blue bags for recyclable waste.
The municipality urges residents and visitors to not place hazardous household waste, like medical waste, batteries, light bulbs, pesticides, and others in any of the mentioned bags. This type of waste can be brought to open days for hazardous household waste or during the festive season can be taken to the KwaNonqaba or Sonskynvallei transfer stations, seven days a week. For the refuse removal schedule for Mossel Bay, visit the news section of the municipal website.

Snakes
Common snakes found in and around Mossel Bay include the puff adder, Cape Cobra, and tree snake (boomslang). Members of the public are urged not to handle snakes found in their homes or near campsites, but to alert Mossel Bay Fire, Rescue and Disaster Management (044 606 5121).
Loadshedding
The load shedding schedule for Mossel Bay is available on the municipal Facebook page and regular updates are posted as they become available. Residents and visitors are reminded to help stop the surge, especially following longer periods of load shedding. Challenges are experienced when restoring power to areas following load shedding slots of 4h duration. Consumers are urged to use electricity sparingly and to keep their major appliances off until the power system has stabilised after restoration at the end of load shedding. It is suggested to keep geysers, stoves, kettles, battery chargers and heaters off for another 30-60 min, following load shedding.
Residents and visitors are requested to use water mindfully during Stage 4 and higher stages of load shedding to avoid interruptions. During Stage 4 and higher stages of load shedding, the Mossel Bay Municipality has noted that certain areas experience low water pressure. This is due to higher stages of load shedding, which may cause potable water to be used faster than the reservoirs can be refilled, especially during warmer weather.
