The ceremony celebrated the continued development of sport across the Garden Route region and highlighted the important role that local sport organisations play in developing young athletes and strengthening the community.
During the event, cheques were formally handed over to a variety of sports federations operating in the region, including Athletics SWD, Eden Biathlon, Eden Chess and the tug of war world champions.
The handovers were conducted by the Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Ricardo Mackenzie, the Garden Route District Municipality’s (GRDM) mayor, Marais Kruger, and Mossel Bay’s mayor, Dirk Kotzé. Also in attendance was the Western Cape Director of Sport and Recreation, Thabo Tutu.
“This event is about investing in the youth through sport,” said Kruger in his welcoming remarks. He also extended his appreciation to the coaches and volunteers in the various sports federations for their positive impact on their communities.
“Mossel Bay is proud to promote inclusion in sport,” added Kotzé, noting that the Mossel Bay Municipality remains committed to building partnerships that benefit local sports development.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by the chairperson of the Eden Sport Council, Desmond Speelman, followed by a group photograph and refreshments, allowing the attendees to celebrate the success of the initiative.
