It was with these words echoing through team members' minds that they faced a wet and, at times, an unsafe trip to Cape Town to de-monstrate to South Africa how to deal with the challenges presented by this competition.
On the first day of the competition, Friday 6 June, it was clear that the younger team members were overwhelmed by the extremely tough challenges they had to undergo. A five-minute cut-off time per challenge never seemed to be enough. But, in order to break the increa-sing nervousness, a quick break to the top of Table Mountain was scheduled for team members and a re-energised Eden team returned on Saturday with the strength and courage to finish and win the competition.
When the final results of the 2014 TFFA competition were announced in the Good Hope Centre, where the competition was hosted, it was of no surprise that the Eden DM team won not only the overall TFFA Men's division, but victoriously also the Women's- and Teams Relay division.
The 2014 TFFA was the third South African Open Toughest Fire Fighter Alive competition. Firefighters from municipalities across South Africa and participants from the Armed Forces, Ports Authority and Aviation Authority also partook in this extremely challenging event.
"Well done, Eden Fire Team, Alistar Windwaai, Edwin Lottering, Luciano James, Kervin Gericke, Branville Abrahams, Elgirvin Esterhuisen Wayne Petzer, Wayne Young, Emile Conrad, David van Niekerk, Bonita Conrad, Marinda Fourie, Janu Minnie and Chris Gerber. Surely a performance to be proud of!"
