MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A sculpture of dolphins has been installed at The Point, Mossel Bay.
De Rust artist Brahm van Zyl crafted the special piece, titled Sacred Life.
It was first exhibited at HermanusFynArts, an outdoor sculpture exhibition along the cliffs of Hermanus.
The artwork is on loan to Mossel Bay Municipality for five to 10 years. The entire sculpture was shaped and welded out of steel.
Van Zyl told Mossel Bay Advertiser he chose dolphins "as a symbol of all forms of life in the so-called 'blue lung of the earth'".
The sculpture incorporates a compass, which symbolises the planet, among leaping dolphins.
"With this work, I hope to create awareness and draw attention to the fragility of the rich ecosystem which lies hidden beneath the waves, and the importance of preserving it today," said Van Zyl.
He developed an interest in art while at school. It was his favourite subject and a hobby from a young age. He then studied Fine Art at the University of Pretoria and completed his studies in 1985.
Van Zyl relocated from Cape Town to De Rust, a town about 35km from Oudtshoorn, a year ago.
